So someone asked me how I got Xsplit to work with Picarto, and that reminded me of the very tough time I had trying to find the answer to my own questions about how to get the two to work together. SO! In light of that, here's a handy-dandy short guide for streamers.

First of all, some background. For those who don't know, Xsplit Broadcaster is exclusively a PC program that will allow you to stream multiple kinds of media (screen capture, video, webcam, skype video, games, etc etc) to a broadcasting site of your choice. It's high definition (at the least it will stream 1280x720 HDTV 16:9 for free users and 1920x1080 HDTV 16:9 for subscription users) and generally, I've found, a useful tool that doesn't require you to do too much to get everything set up for streams every time you start one. It's a great tool, it's free and you should check it out if you want to find out more infromation.

Picarto, for those who don't know, is a .tv website geared exclusively toward artwork (generally more on the anime side, but there's no reason to not use it for other art). Other than the occasional hiccup, it's a great streaming tool that doesn't lag as much for the watchers with the slower internet when they come to watch the stream and unlike most broadcasting browsers I've used to host streams, they don't require you to jump through hoops (aka strongarm you into using their software) to control and mod the chat while you work so you don't have to have mutliple broadcasters active while you stream (regardless of whether you're actually using those broadcasters). Right now it's in Beta, so I would suspect there are more changes to come and I would expect there to be a small issue every now and then. But even in Beta I greatly prefer it over Livestream or Ustream or anything else I've used.

So. The real reason you're here. This is actually really simple, just make sure you have both your Picarto Dashboard and Xsplit open.

On Xsplit, go to the menu BroadcastOUTPUTS>Add Channel>Custom RTMP

You will generally do this anytime you want to stream using a site not listed in Xsplit's broadcasting templates (thus far they have profile templates for Livestream, Justin, FC2 Live, Nico Nico Live, Popler, twitch, Youtube Live, GoodGame, Akamai Networks, CyberGame, Dailymotion, hitbox, limelight networks, local streaming (meaning recording straight to your computer without broadcasting), Meridix Sports Network, Sina, and Ustream. So really, there's lots to choose from if you broadcast elsewhere. Also be aware that some of these, like local streaming, are not available without subscription.

Anywho, after you select "Custom RTMP" a new window will open up. The name and description are important only as far as you need to identify it, so you can name it whatever your little heart desires. It's the next two that are the important bits

Now go to Picarto.tv and go to your Dashboard. Since Picarto updated their site and UI, you can now find this information by clicking your little picture and going to "Set Up" and then the Livestream tab. Looks like they updated again. This information is found by clicking your icon in the upper right corner, selecting "Configuration" and then going to the "Stream Setup" tab.

It should look something like this: PicartoRTMPlink by Yokoboo

RTMP URL: [under "Streaming Server" there will be an rtmp link. Put that here]
Stream Name: [Where it says "Stream Key", copy and paste that whole thing and put it here]

After that, it's just whatever you want to set your stream details as. You can also click the "Test Bandwidth" button to see if it works. About a couple weeks or a month ago, the rtmp link for Picarto was changed so streaming directly from Xsplit stopped working for a bit until I realized I needed to update the link.

So if something goes wrong, it's most likely something that was changed on Picarto's end because it's still in Beta. The way I found out something was wrong was that all the watchers in the chat could hear the stream, but no video was coming in. So it's important to keep in mind that if only one person has a problem with the stream, it's probably on their end, but if they all have the same problem, it might be time to test the bandwidth again and make sure the links and keys are up to date. The first go-to solution if a viewer can't see the stream is to ask them the refresh and see if that solves it (it more often than not does). If you have to restart the stream it's more than likely that most people in the stream will need to refresh the page (again, Picarto is still in Beta, it's an issue, but it's relatively small compared to the problems I had with Livestream).

That's it. Hope it helps!

I have a question-Does Picarto allow you to speak into a microphone so you can talk to your audience? I don't mind typing, but I thought it would be more fun to talk to my friends while I draw

That is controlled by whatever broadcasting software you're using, not Picarto.  Xsplit does have separate controls for your mic and speakers/system sounds, so if you use Xsplit you'll be able to use a mic to stream on Picarto.

Hey mate, thanks a lot for this guide!!  It's very well explained and very useful.
It helped me a lot when I was trying to set up my settings to make a livestream on Picarto! :D I did a test last weekend and the broadcasting works very well on my computer with this software.

I still have a little doubt, though...so I think I'd like to ask :)
I realized one can't record the live streams on Picarto, so I would like to know if I can record them from Xsplit. And if that's the case, how I can record?
If you could help me with this, I would really appreciate it!

Glad the guide was helpful to you!

And yes, you can absolutely record your broadcasts from Xsplit.

On the settings screen for your custom RTMP/Picarto (Outputs>gear wheel next to your Picarto setting), there's a checkbox labeled "Automatically save recording on local drive".  If you check that, the broadcasts will automatically be recorded and saved in the "C:>Users>[Your profile name]>My Videos>Xsplit Videos - [Your profile name]>Picarto" folder (if you use multiple platforms to stream like I do, Xsplit will automatically organize your videos according to platform).

Please read the guide carefully, it says exactly where you need to put the stream key.  If you are having problems, please keep in mind that I'm not tech support, if you want help in a timely manner with whatever issue you're having, please be as specific as possible with what you're having problems with, since I cannot see your computer or fix anything for you.

Older version of what? of Xsplit?  I've rechecked the info in the guide and it's all still up to date.  Like it says in the guide, you put the stream key in the spot where it says "Stream Name".

I would suggest running a test before trying to stream (you'll find this on the set up screen when you set up the custom RTMP)- the test will basically log in and "ping" the website to make sure your upload speed is good as well as making sure you can stream.  If the test fails, Xsplit will tell you where it failed the test which will allow you to pinpoint what the issue is.

Hey there! I'm trying to stream but when I check my page it says that it's offline, even though XSplit says it's currently broadcasting. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Could you help me out if you've got the time?

I would check and make sure your stream key is correct first (in some updates to Picarto stream keys have been updated/changed without notice).  If it is correct, try streaming and wait about a minute- I've noticed that Picarto sometimes takes a while, whether that's due to heavier traffic or something else going on with the site, I don't know.

Hello! I use OBS but it's more of an issue on picarto's end? When I start the stream and go to picarto to look it starts w a LONG delay, and it has the delay throughout the whole stream? How do I fix this?

well first, you're always going to have some sort of delay.  And the longer you run the stream the longer the delay will get.

Delay happens because of slow upload speeds, as well as slow download speeds for whoever is watching.  So it has more to do with your internet provider than anything else.

As long as "exclusive capture" is unchecked for the object properties when you select the area of the screen you want to capture, yes.

OH THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! I have set up XSplit once before and I had no freaking idea that "Stream name" IS actually "stream Key"! Picarto's support never explained this to me! Instead they mumbled a lot about everything else! So thank you! This is simple, clear and what I needed to get my streaming to work  Bless you, you sweet darling! :huggle:

Yeah it was a bit confusing for me at first too when they switched it up.  Should be under Output>Set Up a New Output (second option from the bottom)> Custom RTMP

click your icon in the top right.  Directly underneath is an arrow pointing to the right.  That's the logout button and if you hover over the symbol it tells you that it's the logout button with a tooltip.

if you're using the free version, you can stream up to 1080p with a watermark.  I don't know if the software still allows you to stream in higher resolutions, but if it does, I believe it's gated behind the subscription model.  When you activate a stream, it will ask you before it starts what resolution you want to use.

You need to resize it on your preview screen in Xsplit because when you insert video sources it won't automatically make it fullsize.

If it's set up then you should have the name of your stream under the outputs menu.  You click that to start the stream and click it again to stop it.
